Why it's the right time to get involved in startups
The Australian startup ecosystem is booming. Greater Springfield - Australia's first privately built city just North of the Gold Coast in Brisbane plans to become the next Silicon Valley. The Federal government revealed a $1.2 billion Digital Economy Strategy for the next six years with several initiatives to support the tech and startup sector. Australian startups are hitting historic valuations and have increasingly become household names around the world, cementing Australia as a noteworthy destination for startups and innovation.
As a student, opportunities and careers in startups are somewhat neglected amongst traditional corporate or private-sector roles. This seems like a slight injustice considering the many benefits of working in startups. Starting off in a startup means you'll have a lot more responsibility and impact in the day-to-day functions of the business compared to a traditional graduate role in a large company. You'll be able to determine the success of the company with your decisions and actions, and if your startup goes on to receive funding, then you'll continue to grow your wealth and responsibility as the company grows.
This week, Canva, the tech giant design company hit a historic $55 billion valuation after securing $200 million in fresh funding. This capital raising makes it the most valuable private consumer software company ever, worth more than the ASX listed telecommunications giant, Telstra. Perhaps even more impressive is Melanie Perkin's (Co-founder of Canva) plans to give away a majority of her multi-billion dollar net worth to philanthropic causes. Her 30 per cent stake of shared with her partner, Cliff Obrecht is worth $16 billion.
While Canva's success may seem like a unicorn of a story, there are startups that will someday reach this status in the near future. Being part of a booming startup or even starting your own will be highly fulfilling but also a long journey of hard work and iterations.
